Dentures and Oral Health

Dentures are dental prosthetic devices that replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. At Courtyard Dental, they are removable and custom-made to fit the individual's mouth. Dentures can be complete or partial, depending on whether they replace all teeth or only a few missing teeth.

Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, and they consist of a complete set of artificial teeth mounted on an acrylic base that resembles gum tissue. They are placed on the gums and held in place through suction or with the help of denture adhesives.

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth are still present. They are designed to fill the gaps created by missing teeth and are attached to a metal or plastic framework that clasps onto the remaining natural teeth for support and stability.

Dentures are custom-made for each individual, considering factors such as the jaw's shape, the bite's alignment, and the patient's desired aesthetics. They restore the appearance of a natural smile and help in chewing, speaking, and maintaining facial structure.

The Procedure for Dentures

If you proceed with dentures, the dentist will take impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth. These impressions will serve as a model to create dentures that fit your mouth precisely. Measurements of your bite and jaw relationship may also be taken to ensure proper alignment of the dentures. Based on the impressions and measures, the dentist will work with a dental laboratory to create a custom set of dentures unique to your mouth. The artificial teeth' color, shape, and size will be chosen to achieve a natural and appealing appearance.

Once the dentures are ready, you will have a fitting appointment with the dentist. They will place the dentures in your mouth and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit and proper alignment. This may involve adjusting the shape or contour of the dentures and making any necessary changes to the bite.

The Benefits of Dentures

  • Dentures allow individuals with missing teeth to chew food more effectively, improving their ability to eat various foods and maintain a balanced diet.
  • Dentures support the lips and cheeks, improving speech clarity and pronunciation of words.
  • Dentures are designed to resemble natural teeth and gums, enhancing the appearance of the smile and restoring facial aesthetics.
  • By restoring a complete set of teeth, dentures can boost self-confidence and improve social interactions. They help individuals feel more comfortable smiling, speaking, and engaging in social activities.
  • Dentures help maintain the natural structure of the face by providing support to the lips and cheeks. This can prevent a collapsed or sunken-in appearance that can occur with missing teeth.
  • Dentures are customized to fit each individual's unique oral anatomy, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit.
  • Dentures are generally more affordable than tooth replacement options, such as dental implants or bridges.

Regular dental check-ups will also be necessary to ensure the dentures continue to fit well and monitor your oral health. To learn more about dentures, visit Courtyard Dental at 2410 San Ramon Valley Blvd Ste 148, San Ramon, CA 94583, or call (925) 855-1604.
