Tips for Caring for Your Teeth Over Christmas

Christmas is a time for family, friends, and celebration. It's also a time to enjoy a variety of foods and drinks. Here are tips to keep teeth healthy this holiday season:

Avoid Sticky Foods & Candy Canes

There are a few things that you should avoid over the holidays in order to protect your teeth. This includes candy canes, sticky foods, and sugary beverages. If you chew on hard candy or tough candy canes, they can damage the enamel of your teeth. You should also be sure to brush and floss after consuming these foods because food particles can become stuck in between the teeth if not properly removed.

Drink More Water

You should also avoid drinking any sugary sodas or fruit juices. These types of drinks are very acidic and can easily wear away the enamel of your teeth. Instead of drinking these beverages during the holiday season, you should stick with water! We also recommend giving yourself extra time to brush your teeth in the morning before you start your day so that you can remove any sugar from your mouth and keep your smile healthy!

Don't Forget to Brush and Floss

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth twice a day. Consider using an electric toothbrush for better cleaning results. Floss between teeth at least once a day to remove plaque from areas your toothbrush can't reach. Rinse your mouth with water after eating sugary foods or drinks.

No Smoking

Avoid smoking to protect your oral health as well as your overall health. The habit harms the body in many ways. It increases your risk of oral cancer, gum disease, tooth loss, and more. It can also increase your risk of developing heart disease, lung disease, and many other serious health problems.

See Your Dentist for Regular Checkups

During your examination, your dentist may detect early signs of decay or gum disease that can be treated before they become worse. A cavity is easier to fix when it's small and hasn't eaten through the tooth, and the early stages of gum disease can be reversed with more frequent cleanings and improved oral hygiene techniques. By seeing your dentist regularly, you can reduce the chances of problems during the busy holiday season when your brushing habits may be interrupted.

Make sure you keep these helpful tips in mind so you can enjoy the holidays without damaging your smile!
